Transfer round-up: Arsenal prepare imminent bid for Houssem Aouar

In the second article of my transfer round-up mini series, following up on the first which was on Lucas Torreira’s possible departure, I will be looking at a potential arrival at Arsenal, Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.

The 22-year-old French midfielder is regarded as one of the best under-23 midfielders in the world and is mainly known for his excellent dribbling ability and accurate passing in midfield.

Stylistically, he has had comparisons to Andres Iniesta in the way he carries the ball effortlessly and draws fouls by doing so, alongside the fact that he isn’t a goal scoring midfielder but offers a very strong link between defence and attack.

Similar to my previous transfer round-up article, I will provide all the latest news I can find on Aouar’s potential move to the Gunners, but it is to be remembered that all the upcoming information should not be taken as definite due to different sources having varying levels of reliability.

This transfer first started to heat up on September 10, when the reliable French outlet L’Equipe reported that Aouar wanted to leave Lyon this transfer window. As of the time, interest from PSG, Manchester City and Juventus had not amounted to anything, and the only bid they received was a player-plus-cash deal from Arsenal.

This offer would have seen Matteo Guendouzi go the other way. However, this was swiftly rejected, with the Ligue 1 side making it clear they would only accept cash for their want-away midfielder, and that the Arsenal man didn’t fit their replacement criteria.

Arsenal have been trying to offload midfielder Matteo Guendouzi due to his attitude issues and problems with manager Mikel Arteta, however the Gunners are yet to sell the Frenchman. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BY THE DAILY MAIL.

Almost a week passed with Arsenal fans left in suspense as the club looked to seal the sales of Emiliano Martinez and Lucas Torreira, but on September 16, Telefoot-Chaine, another reliable source from France, said Arsenal will make another offer of more than €40m for Aouar, and that the Frenchman is a top target for manager Mikel Arteta.

However, just 45 minutes after this news broke, Le10Sport reported that PSG are also formulating an offer for Houssem Aouar. Thankfully for Arsenal fans, they also report the Gunners are leading the race for his signature with a bid expected, along with the fact that the Frenchman is not a priority for PSG. In my opinion, this is not a hugely reliable outlet though so Arsenal fans do not need to worry too much about this.

That now brings us to today, where Fabrizio Romano, a reporter for The Guardian who I believe is one of the best sources for transfer news, confirmed this morning that Aouar wants to join Arsenal, however personal terms are not yet agreed.

Calcio Mercato journalist, Daniele Longo, also believes Aouar wants to play for Arsenal in the Premier League, however he adds that Lyon are expecting a total offer of around €50m from the Gunners. Whilst this is good news, I am not too sure on this source’s reliability though.

Overall, what we know for sure is an Arsenal bid for Aouar is imminent and that the player wants to join the club, given this information has been provided by strong sources. In my opinion, I believe this transfer will get done, however it is likely to drag on, as it has done since the rumour appeared a month ago.
