Mesut Ozil’s agent Dr Erkut Sogut calls for transparency as saga drags on

Mesut Ozil’s agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, has asked for Arsenal fans to be given an honest explanation by manager Mikel Arteta after the 32-year-old was left out of the Gunners’ Premier League squad.

The Turkish agent didn’t hold back in his interview with ESPN, as he criticised Arteta for failing to be honest and transparent with his client, whilst also not showing him the respect he deserves for staying loyal.

Dr Sogut said: “Arsenal fans deserve an honest explanation, not [Arteta] saying, ‘I failed Ozil.’ You didn’t fail Ozil, you failed to be fair, honest and transparent and treat someone with respect who has a contract and was loyal all the time.

“Every single person outside knows he hasn’t treated him fairly. He didn’t give him a chance to show himself this season. I spoke with at least five teammates who say he is training great. They say Mesut is one of their best players, and they cannot understand why he is left out.”

The German playmaker has not featured once for the Gunners since lockdown last season, with rumours flying around as to why Ozil has been dropped from the squad.

Whilst there have always been concerns about the midfielder’s commitment, given his number of absences from the squad under all his previous Arsenal managers, this time it seems more serious.

Ozil hasn’t been someone to keep himself out of the spotlight, even if it’s put on him by other people, and the German’s decision to talk about the killing of Muslims in China, whilst also not taking a pay cut, seem to be the most logical explanations as to why he hasn’t featured this season.

However, Mikel Arteta, when speaking in his pre-match press conference before the Europa League tie against Rapid Vienna, said the midfielder has been left out for footballing reasons and that he believes he was fair with him throughout the whole squad selection process.

Mikel Arteta has seemingly taken bullets for the club after questions about Ozil were fired at him during his press conference, however it doesn’t look like they will be stopping any time soon. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BY HITC.

Arteta said: “What can I say from my side? It’s just a football decision that my conscience is very calm about because I was very fair with him. My level of communication with him has been really high, we know what to expect from each other.

“He has had the opportunity like everybody else. I’m sad that I had to leave three players off this list, which is never pleasant, but I just have to say that I tried to look everybody in the eye and be comfortable with it. With Mesut, I had this feeling because I have been very straightforward since I arrived at this club.”

This is a problem which Arsenal seem to have wanted to go away for months, having never released an official statement addressing it. As a result, fans have not only been left without an answer, but also another side to the story. For the club’s sake, they need to start taking action to solve this problem once and for all so everyone can move on.
