Martin Odegaard has been convinced within a “matter of hours” to join Arsenal on loan until the end of the season and will miss Real Madrid training on Friday to fly to London and complete his move to Arsenal, according to sources close to Arsenal Central.
Arsenal have anticipated the departure of Mesut Ozil for months now after being dropped completely from Mikel Arteta’s plans. During this time, the Spaniard and his executive team have eyed up options elsewhere to fulfil the attacking-midfielder position at Arsenal until the end of the season where they will re-evaluate their financial position.
When Mikel Arteta was asked about the possibility of bringing the Norwegian 22-year-old to the Emirates during the transfer window, Mikel Arteta dismissed the journalists question with his standard protocol answer of “sorry, guys, but I cannot comment on players who play for different clubs.”
No significance to this phrasing from Mikel Arteta as this was the same answer that he gave when being linked with Thomas Partey right at the start of the summer transfer window and Gabriel Magalhaes too who both became Arsenal players before the summer transfer deadline on the 8th of October 2020.
Arsenal Central understand that negotiations have run smoothly between the club and Odegaard’s representatives over the course of Thursday night and through into the early hours of Friday morning and the Norwegian international is ready to make his move to London and reunite with Dani Ceballos who was also loaned out by Real Madrid to Arsenal at the start of the 2019/20 season, extended into the 2020/21 season after a triumphant end to the season.
Martin Odegaard will miss training with Real Madrid ahead of the Spanish giants’ clash against Alavés. The 22-year-old only completed 1 hour of Gym Work in Thursday’s session at Real Madrid’s training complex after deciding to leave early due to “personal matters” whilst the Norwegian’s teammates completed a 3-hour long session ahead of their La Liga fixture on Saturday.
It is understood by sources close to Arsenal Central that Martin Odegaard will miss Friday’s session to fly to London and complete his loan move to Arsenal. The details of the move have not been disclosed by Odegaard’s representatives but it is believed by Arsenal will have the option to buy at the end of the season if the loan move is successful but at the moment those reports are unconfirmed.
Due to the elite sportsmen bubble, Martin Odegaard will not have to quarantine when arriving in London which means he will be able to travel to Arsenal’s London Colney Training Centre, meet up with his teammates ahead of the Gunners’ midweek fixture against Southampton on the south coast.
Martin Odegaard and his representatives came to a conclusive decision about his future after late-night discussions with Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar as the Norwegian was convinced by the Arsenal manager’s philosophy and the direction that the Spaniard wants to take this team in over the course of his first full season in charge of the Gunners.
Arsenal have done their business in this transfer window systematically, letting go of players on big wages and freeing up funds before bringing in reinforcement in positions that will help The Gunner’s challenge for silverware this season.
